What turf grows best in shade?
Buffalo grasses and some zoysia varieties perform best in shaded areas. They handle limited sunlight far better than couch, which needs full sun to survive. We’ll help you choose the right option based on how much sun your yard actually gets.
How much sunlight does shade-tolerant turf need?
Most shade-tolerant turf still needs a few hours of direct or filtered sunlight each day. Heavy, full shade all day will limit growth, so we always assess whether your space is suitable before recommending a turf.
Will shade-tolerant turf handle kids and pets?
Yes. Quality buffalo and zoysia turfs are soft underfoot and durable enough for kids and pets, as long as they’re laid correctly and given the right care while establishing.
Why does couch grass fail in shaded areas?
Couch needs full sun. In shade, it thins out, struggles to recover, and often gets taken over by weeds or moss. That’s why we don’t recommend it for shaded yards.
